Explore Outlander : Blood of My Blood Filming Locations in Scotland

With Outlander : Blood of My Blood returning for its second season, Scotland is once again taking a starring role. The Outlander prequel tells the stories of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen MacKenzie, alongside the remarkable story of Claire's parents, Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston. While the drama transports viewers into the Scotland of the early 18th century, and the world of the First World War, many of the locations seen on screen are real places you can discover during a visit to Scotland. Here are some of the Scottish locations that helped bring Blood of My Blood to life. Doune Castle (Castle Leoch) One location will be instantly familiar to Outlander fans. Doune Castle, near Stirling, once again provides the exterior of Castle Leoch, ancestral home of Clan MacKenzie and an important setting in the story of Ellen MacKenzie. The magnificent medieval castle previously appeared as Castle Leoch in the original Outlander series. In real life, Doune is one of Scotland's best-preserved medieval castles and has an impressive screen CV beyond Outlander, having also appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones. Best of all, this is one filming location that you can actually explore. Balvaird Castle (Castle Leathers) Another genuine Scottish castle appearing in Blood of My Blood is Balvaird Castle in Perthshire. The remarkably complete tower house was transformed into Castle Leathers for the series. Dating [...]

Why a Private Guided Tour of Scotland Offers a Better Experience Than a Large Group Tour

Scotland is a country best explored at your own pace. From the dramatic peaks of Glencoe to the hidden fishing villages of the East Neuk, every corner of the country has a story waiting to be discovered. While large coach tours remain a popular option for visitors, more travellers are choosing private guided tours to experience Scotland in a more personal, flexible and memorable way. At Aura Tours Scotland, we believe that seeing Scotland should be about more than simply ticking famous landmarks off a list. Here are some of the reasons why a private guided tour can offer a far richer experience than a large group tour. Your Tour, Your Way One of the biggest advantages of a private tour is flexibility. Large group tours operate on fixed schedules and pre-planned itineraries designed to suit dozens of passengers. This often means strict time limits at attractions and little opportunity to explore beyond the schedule. With a private guided tour, the day revolves around you. Whether you want to spend longer exploring a historic castle, stop for photographs at a scenic viewpoint, or discover a hidden gem that’s not in the guidebooks, your itinerary can be tailored to your interests and pace. Discover Scotland Beyond the Tourist Trail Scotland’s most magical places are often the ones that large coaches simply cannot reach. Narrow Highland roads, secluded beaches, remote glens and family-run businesses are often overlooked [...]

Culloden – From Outlander To Bonnie Prince Charlie

Visiting Culloden Battlefield is a powerful and moving experience, offering insight into one of the most significant and tragic events in Scottish history. Located just 5 miles east of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, Culloden Moor is easily accessible by car and is a popular stop for many of Aura Tours Scotland’s visitors. The site marks the location of the Battle of Culloden, fought on 16 April 1746. This was the final confrontation of the Jacobite Rising, where supporters of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) attempted to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. The battle itself was shockingly brief, lasting less than an hour, yet devastating in its impact, with around 1,600 men killed—most of them Jacobites. This defeat effectively ended the Jacobite cause and had lasting consequences for Highland culture, including the suppression of traditional dress and customs. Today, the battlefield has been carefully preserved and restored to resemble its appearance in 1746. Visitors can walk across the moor using well-maintained paths, passing key landmarks such as the Memorial Cairn and clan grave markers. The battlefield itself is open year-round and can be accessed free of charge, making it a meaningful stop for anyone exploring the Highlands. For a deeper understanding, the Culloden Visitor Centre, run by the National Trust for Scotland, offers an immersive experience. Inside, you’ll find interactive exhibits, artefacts from both sides of the conflict and a powerful [...]
